Search-and-rescue team drills in Irvine for quake

IRVINE – California Task Force 5, an 80-member FEMA search-and-rescue team, mobilized and trained Thursday after a simulated earthquake at Orange County Great Park.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency crew is made up of specially trained firefighters from Orange County Fire Authority and the Anaheim, Santa Ana and Orange fire departments as well as trained civilians and search canines.

The task force, also known as CATF-5, is similar to those deployed to Haiti and Japan for disaster response. Some members of the team have experience serving after the Oklahoma City bombing and Hurricane Katrina.

The drills on Thursday included breaching walls, searching for survivors with canines and rescuing victims.
